Migraines Among Children on the Rise

Migraine, Migraines, Headache, Headaches, Head Pain, Migraine Headaches, Migraine Relief, Headache Relief, Tension Headache, Tension Headaches, Migraine Headaches, Migraine Headaches ReliefWhile many adults suffer from migraines globally, children are seen to have them more frequently. Adults with migraines are up to about 12%, but children have now reached 10%. That means nearly as many children get migraines as adults.

Caring for migraines isn’t easy regardless of a person’s age. A doctor’s suggestions might include:

  • Over-the-counter and prescription medications
  • Surgery (in extreme cases)
  • Dietary changes

Medications have not been proven to be entirely successful, however. When one is caring for a child, especially a teen, changing hormones must be taken into consideration.

Sumatriptan has recently been approved for children in a smaller dose than is given to adults. It is meant to improve blood flow to the brain and the dura mater – they layer of tissue that protects the spinal cord and brain. It has not lived up to its expectations in all cases and comes with the potential for dangerous side effects such as:

  • Stroke
  • Bleeding and ulceration of the stomach
  • Blood clots
  • Heart attack
  • Intestinal issues

This is causing parents to seek out natural care for their children. Where can this be found?

Spinal Alignment and Increased Blood Flow to Reduce Migraines

A misalignment in the bones of the upper neck – the C1 and C2 vertebrae – can hinder blood flow from getting to the brain, leading to migraines. Misalignments take place due to sporting accidents, trip and fall injuries, vehicle crashes, and other activities that affect the head or neck.

By seeking the care of an upper cervical chiropractor, one is on the right road to finding natural help. Here at Thrive Chiropractic and Wellness Center in Onalaska, Wisconsin, we are trained to find the tiny misalignments of the neck and correct them using a gentle method that does not involve popping or cracking the spine. This makes our technique safe for young and old alike. It may even lead to a reduction or total elimination of migraines.
