Post-Concussion Syndrome: What It Is and How to Care for It

When someone has had a concussion, most often it is assumed he has fallen, hit his head, and passed out. However, this is not the only way a concussion occurs. It can actually come about by any kind of jarring motion to the head. For example, if you are violently shaken, you may endure a concussion even if you do not lose consciousness. You may not even be aware you have had a concussion since you didn’t actually hit your head and pass out. Until you begin experiencing symptoms, you may not realize additional care may be required after this type of injury.

Symptoms may persist for as long as a year after the original injury. If you are experiencing vertigo, tension headaches, or migraines for a week to ten days after the incident, you may have what is called post-concussion syndrome or PCS. Migraines are intense, throbbing pain often located in one spot on the head, while tension headaches are more like a vice gripping the head and squeezing. Vertigo is the sensation that you or the things around you are spinning.

Symptoms of Post-Concussion Syndrome

PCS often is connected to an upper neck injury that is irritating the nerves of the spinal cord and brain, bringing about neurological pain. In addition to tension headaches, migraines, and vertigo you may notice the following:

  • Irritability
  • Anxiety
  • Insomnia
  • Fatigue
  • Sensitivity to light and sound
  • Poor concentration
  • Memory problems
  • Dizziness

These are lingering symptoms that can have a negative impact on your overall well-being and life quality.
